Four BC Concrete Projects Win National Awards

Vancouver - The BC Ready-Mixed Concrete Association (BCRMCA) today congratulated the BC government on winning national P3 awards for four BC landmark construction projects, each built primarily with concrete.

The Canadian Council for Public-Private Partnerships has recognized:
- the Canada Line Rapid Transit Project with a Gold Award for Infrastructure;
- the Sea-to-Sky Highway Improvement also with a Gold Award for Infrastructure;
- the Golden Ears Bridge Project with the Silver Award for Infrastructure; and,
- the Royal Jubilee Hospital Patient Care Centre with the Silver Award for Project Financing

"It's great to see these projects recognized for their vision and innovation," says Bruce Willmer, BCRMCA President.  "By investing now in projects designed to last over 75 years, the BC government is delivering long lasting value for money for taxpayers.  This infrastructure will continue to serve generations of British Columbians, without burdening our grandchildren with large maintenance or repair bills."

Each of the four award-winning projects used a significant amount of local concrete, for a combined total of just under half a million cubic metres, demonstrating the versatility and durability of this made-in-BC building product.

"Concrete is uniquely suited to meet the technical and physical challenges of British Columbia's rugged and diverse geography" said Willmer. "Concrete mixes can be customized to suit the purpose of virtually any structure or design, any location or type of stress."

In a BC Government statement, Premier Gordon Campbell noted that these were "some of the largest and most complex projects in our province's history" and they were delivered "on budget and on time - or sooner".

Concrete can contribute to longer-lasting buildings, buried infrastructure, cost-effective roads, high-performance transit systems and bridges, reliable distribution of safe drinking water, safe and healthy storm and sanitary sewers, as well as greater energy efficiency in the workplace and at home.

The Canadian Council for Public-Private Partnerships annual awards recognize innovation and excellence in the structuring and delivery of public private partnerships, an area in which B.C. continues to be a leader across North America. www.pppcouncil.ca/nationalAwards.asp
